Below are t3 simple NLP techniques to set boundaries that are closer to NLP Practitioner level. You can use these techniques for yourself or someone else.
Last week on our Global NLP Blog, we offered an NLP Master Practitioner technique created by our students in class.
NLP Master Practitioner Technique for Setting Boundaries
3 Simple NLP techniques to set boundaries
NLP technique 1: using the NLP meta model to determine two sides of the boundary
1. What specifically is the boundary?
2. What would happen if the boundary was not set?
3. What would happen if the boundary is set?
This offers clarity, as usually the outcomes of whether or not we set a boundary and how it could impact us are often left unconscious.
NLP Technique 2: positive intent (NLP technique used in patterns such as parts integration)
Another piece of clarity and self-forgiveness in setting boundaries vs not setting boundaries is achieved by asking the following questions:
1. If you were to ask your unconscious mind/your gut/your intuition a question, this is very different from your logical thought. What is the positive intent behind not setting the boundary?
2. What is the positive intent behind setting the boundary?
NLP Technique 3: using NLP submodalities
1. Imagine what you would see, hear, and feel, if you did not set a boundary. How would it impact you in the long term? Make sure that this representation is experienced looking through your own eyes, as if it is happening right now (in NLP we call this an associated view).
2. Play a movie of you not setting the boundary (dissociated). Lower the volume of the movie, make it dimmer, black and white, and put it in the distance at the size of a postage stamp.
3. Imagine what you would see, hear, and feel if you did set the boundary. Experience this representation through your own eyes. Increase the volume to a point where this becomes more intense, make the image larger and brighter.
