Self-Assessment Tools for Personal Development

Self Assessment Tools for Personal Development

Self-assessment tools for personal development—or as I like to call them, “the mirror that never lies unless you use the wrong tool.” Let’s be honest: not all self-assessments are created equal. Some are endorsed by clickbait enthusiasts who just want access to your social media details or insight into your Netflix habits. (In my case, documentaries and true crime—what does that say about me?)

The truth is, some self-assessment tools don’t care how charming you are at dinner parties or how quickly you can whip up an entertaining blog post. These tools have scientific merit. They shine a spotlight on the parts of yourself you should be paying attention to. They can help you make better decisions and gain self-awareness—or even a clearer understanding of how you relate to others.

If you’re a coach using self-assessment tools, scientific reliability and validity are critical. They can make or break the quality of your work—make you look like a genius, or, well… a total tool.

Introduction to Self-Assessment Tools for Personal Development

Self-assessment isn’t about becoming your perfect self; it’s more about becoming your happiest, most aligned, and authentic self.   It’s not a self-assessment test where you can pass or fail. You are always a winner, as self-assessment tools can help with many things and are ideal for setting goals and identifying areas for improvement.

This benefits your personal and professional growth. It’s about gaining self-awareness—understanding which parts of yourself to leverage or improve so you can work with what you’ve got and embrace who you truly are. It’s like that honest friend who tells you who you really are: sometimes you’ll agree, and sometimes you’ll feel a little called out.

At the very least, a good self-assessment tool for personal development gives you a few “cheat codes”—small behavior changes you can make to improve yourself. The great tools go even further. They provide clarity and stepping stones to upgrade significant areas of your life, helping you rewrite the coding of your brain (with or without NLP).

Let me share my list of favorite tools that I love to work with.

Free Self-Assessment Tools for Personal Development

Smart people love free tools—when they’re good.

Life Wheel (Most Popular Self-Assessment Tool for Personal Development)

After more than 25 years of teaching coaching and NLP, I consider the Life Wheel the Jedi sword of a life coach. It’s straightforward and, in just minutes, it can help you identify your levels of satisfaction across different areas of your life. This tool is especially brilliant for uncovering work-life balance and gaining a clearer perspective on your priorities.

The Life Wheel resembles a pie chart divided into 8 segments, where you rate your satisfaction on a scale of 1 to 10 in various areas of life. While you can customize the wheel however you like, the most common components include: career, finance, health, fun & recreation, friends & family, significant other, personal development, and physical environment

Here is a sample taken from the 8-tool Life Compass in our store

Wheel of Life Form

Here’s the thing—I’ve never seen anyone with a perfectly round wheel. For most of us, if we tried to put our Life Wheel on a bicycle, we’d end up with a costly dental bill! That said, the Life Wheel provides invaluable clarity about what’s truly happening in your personal and professional life.

NLP Values Assessment (Most Valuable Self-Assessment Tool for Personal Develooment.)

Our personal values, elicited through NLP, are deeply unconscious yet form the very foundation we stand on. Understanding your values is like uncovering a secret compass—it guides you toward the right direction and warns you about what to steer clear of.

These values become your best ally when setting new development goals, pursuing career aspirations, or even navigating a career change. They serve as a powerful tool for both personal and professional direction.

How do an NLP Values Elicitation?

1. Hire an NLP Master Practitioner-level coach trained in this tool.

Not all NLP coaches are trained in values elicitation, so it’s important to ask specifically about their expertise. I’d also recommend verifying whether they’ve spent more than 2.5 hours on the topic. Unfortunately, some schools merely check the box by mentioning the tool without providing proper instruction or practice.

2. Learn how to do the NLP values assessment on yourself.

I’ve developed a method for conducting the NLP values assessment on your own. If you’re intuitive and able to sense answers internally on an unconscious level, you may not need a coach at all. However, if you’re an (over)thinker, you might find this process more challenging—just as some coaches do! That’s why practicing and tuning into your unconscious mind and intuitive sensations is so essential.

Once you uncover your values, you gain awareness of the invisible hand that guides your decisions and emotions. This awareness helps you find clarity and direction in life.

PERMA Assessment

A brilliant self-assessment tool for personal development created by psychologist Martin Seligman.

There’s a research-backed happiness audit associated with the PERMA model, but it can also be simplified into a self-assessment tool. Much like the Life Wheel, you can reflect on and rate your level of satisfaction in each of these areas to gain valuable insights.

VIA Character Strengths

Among the various strength assessments available, the VIA Character Strengths stands out as the best self-assessment tool for identifying strengths.  In fact, all other tools—like StrengthsFinder—paled in comparison the moment I discovered the VIA Character Strengths.

What makes it even better? The online self-assessment is free, as long as the results are sent directly to the individual completing the questionnaire.

Here are three reasons why this tool is a game-changer:

  1. The results are actionable. Instead of obsessing over your weaknesses, you can focus on leveraging your top strengths for growth and success.

  2. It’s highly researched. This tool is backed by extensive scientific research conducted online with participants from all over the world, representing diverse backgrounds.

  3. It’s free. Everyone deserves to know their strengths and weaknesses and benefit from a framework that fosters growth and self-awareness.

Holmes And Rahe Stress Scale - Stress Self- Assessment for Personal Development

I first came across this simple questionnaire during one of the most stressful periods of my life, at a psychologist’s office. That experience taught me an important lesson: stress isn’t always obvious, and one thing can quickly lead to another. Interestingly, even positive life events can trigger stress.

Life changes—whether positive or negative—can create stress. Think of job changes, family issues, moving homes, pregnancy, or the loss of a loved one. When you’re already under significant stress, it’s worth reconsidering big decisions like starting a new career or pursuing career growth.

If you’re prone to stress or burnout-related symptoms, it’s wise to conduct self-assessments periodically. If your score is high, it might be time to adapt, slow down, and cut a few tasks from your to-do list.

Paid Self-Assessment Tools for Personal Development

When it comes to paid tools, the best self-assessment options for personal development offer a significant leap forward. Over the years, I’ve used many—from those that helped clarify career paths to tools that revealed personality traits.

As a coach and NLP trainer, I’ve chosen tools that have proven most beneficial to me and are well-backed by science. With paid self-assessment tools, it’s important to keep in mind:

  1. Both the coach or practitioner needs to be compensated for interpreting the results.
  2. The self-assessment tool itself requires payment.

These tools often serve as both skills assessments and professional development resources. Practitioners administering them typically undergo training not only in the tool’s application but also in statistics, measurement, ethics, and implementation.

EQ-i 2.0 (Emotional Intelligence)

The EQ-i 2.0 measures emotional intelligence across five domains: self-perception, self-expression, interpersonal relationships, decision-making, and stress management—each with its own sub-elements:

  • Self-Perception:

    • Self-regard
    • Self-actualization
    • Emotional self-awareness

  • Self-Expression:

    • Emotional expression
    • Independence
    • Assertiveness

  • Interpersonal:

    • Interpersonal relationships
    • Empathy
    • Social responsibility

  • Stress Management:

    • Flexibility
    • Stress tolerance
    • Optimism

  • Decision-Making:

    • Problem-solving
    • Reality testing
    • Impulse control

EQi2

Why is it important? High Emotional intelligence (EQ) correlates with personal and professional growth. It’s directly linked to well-being, life satisfaction, and success. Developing your EQ isn’t about maximizing scores but achieving balance across the domains.

Regular assessments allow you to track progress, identify areas for improvement, and set clear development goals.

MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator)

The MBTI is among the most validated and respected personality assessments. The official MBTI is the gold standard personality assessments. Far beyond the 16 Personalities test and tools like Keirsey which show similarities to the MBTI.  For most people, these two feel a little bit like MBTI rip-offs.

The Step 2 (Form Q) version provides much more detail,  than the basic Step 1. If you’ve taken the MBTI before, it’s likely you’ve only experienced Step 1. Really this is an incredibly effective assessment tool.

The MBTI explores your preferences in how you:

  • Gather information.
  • Make decisions.
  • Engage with introversion vs. extraversion.
  • Organize your world.

It offers a deeper understanding of your personality type and serves as a strengths finder in its own way. This tool is pivotal for:

  • Self-knowledge.
  • Career options and facilitate finding the ideal career
  • Bridging the gap between yourself and others.
  • Gaining insights into behavior and decision-making.

Strong Interest Inventory

Another lesser-known tool I often administer is the Strong Interest Inventory. This is an effective self-assessment to discover your work personality. Six areas are explored: realistic, investigative, social, enterprising, and conventional.  These are then split into different areas of interest.

It also describes someone’s personal style preferences, which makes it a tool for personal and professional use.  Its ideal use is in career advancement, career interests, and finding a fulfilling career.

Honorable Mentions for Self-Assessment Tools for Personal Development and Professional Growth

If you’re curious, these tools are worth exploring.

NLP Metaprograms

While one of my favorite tools, I believe it doesn’t belong under self-assessment tests because it’s best observed with the help of an NLP coach.

NLP metaprograms measure preferences and habits in processing information, reflecting in behaviors, language, and decision-making. They excel in understanding how to communicate effectively and guide personal and professional development.

Typically, NLP metaprograms are taught in a quality NLP Master Practitioner program.

Enneagram

The Enneagram assigns a type (1 through 9) based on your core motivations, fears, and patterns. While I’ve found the results inconsistent, when they resonate, they can be invaluable.

This tool goes beyond behavior, exploring the why behind actions. It’s introspective and perfect for uncovering blind spots and recurring challenges. Even if not always accurate, the Enneagram offers a lot of food for thought and personal exploration.

DISC - Professional Development

DISC categorizes behavior styles into four keys: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness. It’s widely used for improving team dynamics and communication.

It’s a great tool for work environments, career exploration, professional goals, and career and professional development.

StrengthsFinder (CliftonStrengths)

For years, StrengthsFinder was the go-to strength assessment. I always struggled with its scientific merit, properly measured and qualified by independent resources. Though it is brilliant to help you understand your strengths. It is frequently used by employees and managers of large corporations.

This assessment identifies your top 5 strengths out of 34 possible themes. It shifts the focus from fixing weaknesses to amplifying what you already do well. I think it’s great for improving performance, confidence, and engagement. It is often used in career planning and career development.

The VIA character strengths and StrengthsFinder measure different things. If I were to pick between the two, VIA is the clear winnner.

Conclusion: Self-Assessment Tool for Personal Development

A good self-assessment for personal development can help you adjust, grow, and reflect.
