Self-talk and the leap for change

Self-talk

Self Talk  is something that Claire Naber-Matalqa mentions in her Global NLP Radio interview.

Listen to the Podcast with Claire on phobias, self talk and following your dreams.

What does Claire Naber Matalqa say?

Claire says about the voices inside our heads that tells us to follow our dreams: “The way that we live in the world today, with so much going on, and so much stimulis going on. What’s happened is, in my opinion, the voice inside our head more often than not doesn’t say that. The voice inside our head is actually in the way of that. When we wake up in the morning, go t0 work, see our friends, it’s our fear talking. It’s natural, because biologically, as a body, you want to be safe! And so the voice in our head, because we are moving at a fast pace and we have a lot of different things happening, our way of thinking has shifted. But, what we think is the voice in our head of intuition or instinct is actually not. And that voice is behind what we are hearing every day. And that’s partly why the NLP course changed my life, because I feel it cleared away the noise, so I actually realized the difference between the two, and the actual voice I should be hearing was was sitting there waiting it’s turn.”

Negative self-talk

What Claire clearly describes is “negative self talk”, for which she was the demo in my class. When you think about it more closely, negative self talk is actually positive self talk. Let me explain….

Even the voice, that tells us to not proceed has a positive intention in mind.

Example 1: You shouldn’t follow  your dreams.
Possible positive intention: safety, where you are now is safe! The future may not be.

Example 2: What if I can’t get clients fast enough? I better not make that leap.
Possible positive intention: security, where you are now may not be what you want, but it gives security! That new thing….I don’t have know where to start.

Example 3: I will stay in my abusive relationship, he/she does love me.
Possible positive intention:  love, at least you will not be alone and are loved. Even though for some reason this kind of love hurts.

The positive intention could in reality be true or false, but for the client they are true! Limiting beliefs is one of the things that for instance can be a factor.

For the NLP Practitioners reading this, we technically refer to Self Talk as Auditory Digital (AD.)
