What Does an NLP Coach Do? | NLP Coaching Explained

NLP Coach

What is an NLP Coach? How is it different from a traditional coaching business? What does an NLP session look like? And what exactly is NLP Coaching?

As an NLP trainer, I’m not even sure if my family fully understands what I do for a living—not even my proud parents, who enjoy reading my reviews on Google and Facebook. Whenever they visit and look after my home, they can’t help but notice the thank-you cards and gifts that seem to appear and replenish continuously.

As boomers, it completely blows their minds that people want to learn how to become NLP coaches—not just in obvious urban hubs like Los Angeles, Amsterdam, or Miami, but also in places like Mexico and Bali.

What is an NLP Coach?

An NLP coach is someone who uses (NLP) Neuro Linguistic Programming as a methodology.  This methodology consists of a set of tools and techniques created by studying the way very successful people think, feel, and behave.

How do they use their mind? How does their brain work? How do they navigate emotions, their mindset, and strategies? How do they set goals, solve problems, and reach those goals?

NLP lends itself to psychology, communication, behavioral science, emotional intelligence, neuroscience, and psycholinguistics. In essence, it becomes the practical application of all these fields, rather than just definitions and theories. Collectively, the tools help people reach their fullest potential and drive meaningful change, personal transformation, and empowerment.

Different Types of NLP Coaches

Neuro-Linguistic Programming is a versatile methodology, enabling practitioners to specialize in various areas. While some coaches explicitly identify as NLP coaches, others integrate NLP tools into their broader coaching practices.

Typically, clients seek out an NLP coach because they want to work with the most effective coaching methods. They are also drawn to professionals who can provide powerful tools for mindset and success.

As an NLP coach and trainer, I often work with clients who have not achieved results with other coaches—or with coaches themselves who want to hire an NLP coach for their own growth.

Here are some common types of NLP coaches:

NLP Mindset Coach

An NLP Mindset Coach works with a client’s thought patterns to achieve better results. They help individuals overcome negative self-talk, foster a growth mindset, and build resilience, enabling them to approach challenges and reach goals more effectively and confidently.

NLP Master Coach

An NLP Master Coach typically holds an NLP Master Practitioner certification. They have a more advanced knowledge of NLP and, if trained well, can design their own steo-by-step processes and interventions. They can work with more challenging clients. Whether someone is truly a “Master” in the field depends on the coach’s training background, amount of talent, and experience.

Unfortunately, someone’s training history can get in the way. Many training schools teach the same tools in Master Practitioner training as they do in Practitioner, and they are more focused on rehearsing or fine-tuning existing skills and do not have the coach in mind. Other schools teach new advanced skills and teach students how to design their own techniques and NLP sessions.

NLP Life Coach

An NLP Life Coach helps clients improve various aspects of their personal lives while acknowledging the connection between personal and professional growth. From building stronger relationships to achieving health goals, they guide clients in aligning daily actions with their values and aspirations—helping them lead lives of well-being and happiness.

NLP Success Coach

An NLP Success Coach specializes in helping clients achieve professional goals. They work with entrepreneurs, executives, and other high achievers to optimize performance, boost confidence, and eliminate limiting beliefs—all while focusing on outstanding results.

NLP Business Coach

An NLP Business Coach combines elements of the above coaching methods, applying them specifically to business, career development, company growth, and leadership.

What Does an NLP Session by an NLP Coach Look Like?

One NLP session can be completely different from another. It depends on the client’s unique needs in the session, and the approach of the NLP coach.

NLP tools and techniques can be applied in various ways:

Eyes closed – Using visualization to guide the client through a step-by-step process, technique, or neuro-linguistic rewiring.

Eyes open – Engaging in a technique or step-by-step process, or applying neuro-linguistics with active participation.

Conversationally – Conducting the NLP session through dialogue, with techniques woven naturally into the conversation.

Varied physical postures – Some tools are done sitting down, while others may require standing up for full engagement.

The Start of an NLP Session: Meta Modelling, Rapport, and Observation

An NLP session begins with building rapport and understanding the client’s desired outcomes or challenges. Using techniques like meta-modelling, the coach uncovers patterns in the client’s language, behavior, habits, and how their brain processes information or functions optimally.

The deeper work focuses on fine-tuning how a person processes or handles situations that aren’t working well for them—situations that have become obstacles in their life.

NLP Session Topics Examples

Overcoming Obstacles
Navigating either objective or obstacles, and ones created by the client’s negative self-talk, beliefs, habits, self-esteem, and creating empowering perspectives.

Working with Emotions
Addressing emotional triggers and fostering emotional resilience.

Working with the Past
Rewriting the narrative around past experiences to reduce their emotional hold.

Working with the Present
Identifying actionable steps to tackle current challenges.

Working with the Future
Using visualization techniques to align today’s actions with future aspirations.

Core Change Work: Confidence and Self-Esteem
Working on limiting beliefs,  low self-compassion, self-respect, self-esteem, and more challenging situations rooted in the past.

Conflict, Inner Conflict & Decision Making
Establishing harmony, decision-making, and resolving conflicts.

Improving Communication
Advanced communication techniques in both personal and professional arenas, including negotiation, sales, marketing, the ability to reframe and more.

Better Relationships
Working with the various different relationships we engage with throughout our lives. Our partners, our kids, extended family business partners, friends, co-workers etc. How do you empower people to build stronger connections.

The rabbit hole can go quite far in terms of what an NLP Practitioner and Master Practitioner can do for someones personal and professional life. However, it highly depends on the training program they completed. Request our syllabus to see an example of what a highly experienced Master Trainer can teach in immersive, small-class experiences.

The Superpowers of an NLP Coach

Practitioners and Master Practitioners possess unique skills that set them apart from traditional coaches. Their focus extends beyond simply empowering individuals, mentoring, or facilitating group and team coaching.

Owning the User’s Manual to the Brain

By understanding how the brain processes language and emotions, an NLP coach helps clients “reprogram” their minds for success.

Mastering Rapport Building

Creating trust and a safe space is vital for effective coaching. NLP techniques enable coaches to establish deep rapport quickly and effectively.

Observing Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication

NLP coaches are skilled at interpreting subtle cues in body language and speech, offering insights into clients’ thoughts, emotions, problems, learning styles, habits, and modes of thinking. It can reveal what the client intentionally hides and uncover relevant insights or blindspots the client isn’t aware of.

Neuro-Linguistics

  • Meta Model: A questioning technique to discover what is truly going on, needed, or required, facilitating conscious awareness and uncovering what is unconscious. or blindspots. The client becomes more conscious and alert.
  • Milton Model: A conversational approach that guides the unconscious mind, inspires, motivates, persuades, and empowers.

Programming and Reprogramming

NLP coaches know how to program and reprogram the clients to work more optimally in different contexts, goals, and obstacles.

How to Become an NLP Coach

Steps to Certification to Become an NLP Coach

Becoming an NLP coach typically involves completing a certification program. The issue is that no licensing body is better than the other, and it comes down to the credibility of the trainer and program.

The gold standard also emphasizes live training, which typically includes the following levels:

  • Practitioner
  • Master Practitioner
  • Trainer

Online training options are also available and may have different names for these levels. However, it is equally important to ensure that online programs are affiliated with the licensing bodies mentioned above. We for instance offer a diploma through the Society of NLP for online NLP training called:

  • NLP Communication & Personal Leadership
  • Advanced NLP Communication & Life Strategy

Alongside coaching certifications for Mindset & Life Strategy coaching and mindset & Personal leadership coaching.

Learning Live: The Golden Standard

While online courses are available, live training provides hands-on experience and immediate feedback from instructors. Neuro-Linguistic Programming is practical in nature, focusing on observation, emotions, communication, and thought processes. To truly understand and practice NLP, live training is essential. Learning environments and connection to others matters.

It may be tempting to cut corners with online programs. But ask yourself: would you want your NLP coach to have done so?

Selecting a Good NLP Training Company

When choosing an NLP training program, prioritize those accredited by reputable organizations like the Society of NLP or ITCANLP. Additionally, consider factors such as:

  • Program (content, how it is taught, quality, more is taught than just the basic level etc.)
  • Trainer (reputation, expertise, experience)
  • School (reputation)

NLP Coach Certification vs. (Life) Coach Certification

Both certifications offer unique benefits:

  • NLP Certification: Focuses on mindset and behavioral change, equipping coaches with practical tools, communication skills and techniques to work with thoughts, internal-programming, behaviors, emotions, events in someones past, finding solutions for obstacles.
  • Coach Certification: Is more focused on listening skills, goal-setting, and accountability usually a more general field of knowledge.

You could do both at the same time.

How Much Does an NLP Coach Make?

What an NLP Coach earns varies primarily based on specialization, location, and experience. NLP coaches typically earn between $50 to $300 per hour, with high-end coaches making significantly more. Certifications and niche expertise can enhance earning potential.

Why should NLP coaches charge more?

Merging NLP Techniques with Broader Coaching Practices

How It Works

NLP techniques enhance traditional life coaching by addressing subconscious blocks, enabling clients to achieve deeper personal transformation and sustained growth.

Designing Custom Techniques

Advanced NLP practitioners or certified NLP Master Practitioners, may acquire the skills to design their own tools and interventions. This is a must for an NLP coach to know how to do, as it means they can work with any client in any context but also can integrate their work with other methods and bodies of knowledge,

When selecting their training program, a coach should check if designing techniques is directly and genuinely taught. Some schools don’t teach it at all. Others fail to state that it isn’t directly taught, but it is assumed that you will magically learn it indirectly by doing the course. This is partially true, but to know how to design takes an additional 2 hours of dedicated time directly teaching it.

Conclusion

To be an NLP Coach is not just a profession; it is about mastering a methodology incorporating various tools and techniques. Some of the tools are designed to improve the skillset of the coach, others tools and techniques to unlock a clients fullest potential, addressing deep-rooted obstacles, and acehieve results.
