NLP: setting goals with an away motivated client

Setting goals with away motivated clients

How do you use NLP  in setting goals with away motivated clients. Or perhaps you are the away motivated person yourself.

NLP is a powerful tool for discovering what motivates your clients. One NLP meta-program, in particular, looks at whether someone is motivated to work towards something because of what they do want, or rather, what they do not want. People who are more motivated by avoiding the bad (or moving away from something) take a different approach when it comes to goal setting. Instead of creating expectations and visualising outcomes, working backwards from where clients don’t want to be can provide an effective strategy for them to set goals and strive towards achieving them. NLP can help you uncover if this meta-program is at play with your clients so that you can tailor your techniques to suit their individual needs.

So there are two different types of motivation: toward motivation (which is when you’re motivated by what you can attain, achieve, accomplish), and away motivation (which is when you’re motivated by what you want to move away from, such as what you don’t want to have, the sickness you don’t want to get, the misery you don’t want to put yourself at risk for). These are two very distinctly different types of motivation.

Now you could say NLP is really toward motivated, but unfortunately you have both away and toward motivated clients, or someone who is right in the middle. How do you goal-set around that? When I goal-set with someone like that I can of course do two things. I can sort of let them timeline into it, and if you keep doing what you’re doing this is where you’re going to be headed. You do create some negative states in that, but at least you create an awareness. The client gets an awareness as to what will happen if they keep doing what they’re doing. It’s inherently not just going on repeat, but also creating worse situations for themselves.

Then once I’ve done that, I want to goal-set where I predominantly focus on a toward motivation, but I also add pieces in just from a mentioning point of view as to what they don’t want to have. I can then flip from the negative towards the positive, and someone can easily see when you light up visual, auditory, kinesthetic, olfactory, gustatory in fixing this problem, you really get an idea as to what you wish to achieve. This way you don’t deny the away motivation but you light up the toward motivation more so than a negative state.
