Science & NLP: defining happiness

Defining happiness

Science, NLP, and defining happiness is a requirement if you want to coach yourself or others.

You first need to create a standard or where you or someone is prior to starting any goal, task or exercise.

Previous Article: Testing Happiness: How Happy Are You?

I hope you watched the video and completed last week’s assignments. If you haven’t already, please obtain the Global NLP Training Happiness Guidebook which accompanies this 3 month series, available free of charge on our website.

What is the scientific definition of happiness? For this, we must go to psychologist and researcher Martin Seligman at the University of Pennsylvania.

P = Positive emotion
E = Engagement & flow
R = Relationships
M = Meaning & purpose
A = Achievement and accomplishment

Let’s make sure that you understand what PERMA means, and complete this week’s exercise explained on our YouTube channel.

Science & NLP: defining happiness

This week we are going to combine last week’s life wheel work with PERMA.

Last week’s article:
Testing Happiness: How Happy Are You?

For each area of your life wheel, ask the following questions:

1. How specifically does this area of your life wheel influence your level of positive emotions?

2. Your engagement & flow (where relevant)?

3. Your relationships?

4. Your meaning and purpose

5. Achievement and accomplishment?

When you look at the goal you thought of last week, would completing this goal increase your PERMA? Or do you want to revise the goal you wish to set?

Please make sure that your goal is well-formed, as we say in NLP training. Inside Global NLP Training we teach this as conditions:

  1. Is this something that you are going to do (rather than make someone else do)?
  2. Is it stating what you want (rather than what you don’t want)?
  3. Is it an appropriate chunk-size (meaning is it specific enough)?
  4. Is this what you truly want, rather than a means to really have something else? Otherwise, you may as well set that goal instead.

NLP training technique

Step 1: See yourself doing the steps that need to be completed to reach this goal. As if you are watching yourself in a movie.

Step 2: See your hero or your model of excellence complete the steps to reach this goal in their way. What do you learn?

Step 3: See yourself again going through the process, while adopting some of the ideas the model gave you or not.

Step 4: Turn the movie into a still image the moment the goal is reached.

Step 5: Make this image as attractive as possible. So, when you look at yourself, you can say “that’s how happy I want to be now!”

Step 6: Step into this version of you. Imagine what you would see, hear, and feel the moment you reach this goal.

Step 7: Intensify the feeling.

Stay tuned for next week’s article on this blog to learn about the NLP way to determine how happy you are, and what steps to take to achieve happiness.
